Rob Nichol

Rob Nichol has been at the forefront of professional rugby in New Zealand for more than two decades. As Chief Executive of the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association since its establishment in 1999, Rob has played a pivotal role in ensuring the players are collectively organised and independently represented on key issues that affect them and the game.

Working closely with players and key stakeholders across all levels of professional rugby, Rob has been instrumental in shaping the RPA’s partnership with NZR, Super Clubs, Provincial Unions and other key stakeholders, the player contracting, competitions and employment framework and ensuring players feel both empowered and supported in their personal and professional development, both during and beyond their playing careers. His work has helped set benchmarks for player representation, personal development and career transition in rugby, and across the wider sporting landscape. 

Beyond rugby, Rob has contributed significantly to the establishment and development of athlete associations, including the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association and the Netball Players’ Association. Internationally, he was a founding Executive Director of the International Rugby Players’ Association and remains a respected figure in global athlete representation. 

Rob currently serves as Chair of the New Zealand Athletes’ Federation and was a foundation board member of UNI Global’s World Players’ Association, representing more than  85,000 professional athletes worldwide. His experience spans governance, advocacy, commercial negotiations, and high-performance environments, giving him a deep understanding of the opportunities and pressures athletes face. 

With a background in policing and accounting, and as an experienced business owner, Rob brings a practical, balanced approach to leadership. Trusted by players, Rob is driven by a clear people-first philosophy and a long-standing commitment to protecting, supporting, and empowering athletes. 

Away from his professional roles, Rob is an avid adventure racer. Having competed in demanding endurance events that test resilience, teamwork, and mental toughness. His experience in adventure racing and delivering adventure events reflects the values he brings to his work with players—preparation, problem solving, and the ability to perform under pressure. Rob resides in Auckland with his wife and three children.
